7 Tips For Learning To Fly A Plane

Until the Wright brothers made flying possible, it was a novel concept for humans. A century ago, if you had told people that you fly commercially to reach destinations across the world, they would not have believed you.

There’s been a lot of advancement in the flying industry in the past century. Humankind has seen everything from propeller-powered low-altitude planes to Concordia’s supersonic jets.

Yet, very few people learn how to fly airplanes. In fact, according to statistics, only twenty percent of the people in the United States want to learn how to fly a plane. The primary reasons for this small number are the very strict regulations, the need for special lessons to learn flying and the costs.

However, if you are of the twenty percent, then enjoy the adventure, whether you are learning to fly for professional goals or personal fun. It is a great way to earn a living, a convenient way to travel, and promises incredible views.

To learn flying, you should conduct thorough research to find the ideal school for your needs. Once you’ve done that, you must prepare for your first lesson.

Today we will share some tips that’ll come in handy for your first flying lesson.to make sure your first lesson goes smoothly and comfortably. So, without wasting any more time, let’s get started, shall we?

Define Your Goals

Before you start flying, you need to define and set your goals: whether you want to pursue flying as a career or you want to fly for your hobby. Setting these goals will help you in choosing your schools and lesson type.

To become an airline pilot, you need to sign up with one of the piloting schools with comprehensive, strict training and reduced flying hours: part-141 flying schools. For those who want to fly as a hobby and cannot dedicate a specific time to flying lessons, you need to sign up for a school that has a flexible timetable that fits around your schedule: part-61 flying school.

So you set your goals and choose a school accordingly.

Choose The Right School

To start training to be a pilot, you must choose between the two types of schools. First, there is the part-141 flying school, which has been approved to shorten the flight hours if the students perform well. These schools have highly efficient trainers and extensive curriculums, so every minute counts. It is important to note that their schedule is rigorous. Fun flights and flexible schedules are not available. Additionally, they are more expensive than other schools.

The second type of flying school is part 61, which has laid-back flight schedules and flights but requires more flight hours to get your license. With more flight hours, you can make a schedule that fits your schedule, take fun flights, and go sightseeing with your trainer.

Although part -141 schools are more expensive up front, sometimes part-61 schools are more costly if you need to repeat some flight lessons.

So if you want to pursue flying as your career, part-141 school is best suited for you, but if you want to fly as a hobby, part-61 is the way to go.

Understand The Time Commitment

You need to understand the time commitment before you start taking flying lessons. You must take considerable time out of your schedule when signing up for flying lessons. The most productive way is to take flying lessons for 1-2 hours for 4 or 5 days a week. And even when you are on the ground, you need to study aviation.

You can take days off but only a few because if you take too much time off, you may forget what you learned. So only sign up for flight lessons if you understand and accept the time commitment and are willing to stick to it.

Dress Comfortably

Although this may not sound super important right now, you will thank us after your first flight lesson. You must understand beforehand that most training aircraft are small and not very spacious. You may find it even difficult to move around when you first get in. Therefore, wearing extra tight clothing will be highly counterproductive.

Since flying requires all four limbs, you will need flat shoes instead of heels or boots because, to the surprise of many, you will need to function comfortably and adequately. Similarly, you shouldn’t wear ultralight clothing since it gets surprisingly cold at high altitudes as the temperature drops. Considering all these factors, most piloting schools have uniforms that students must wear to avoid all adverse situations.

Be Curious

To take your flying classes, you must understand that they are just like any other lesson, and you are welcome to ask as many questions as you like. Feel free to ask your instructor to repeat anything you don’t understand.

If you are confused about something, asking questions may be the best thing to do. Any gaps in knowledge mean you can’t apply it practically. As a result, you may need to schedule another lesson to clarify it. This way, lesson costs increase very quickly.

Flying also requires confidence, so if you have concerns related to safety, ask your instructor, and they will be able to address them.

Maintain A Positive Attitude

This rule applies to everything in life. The more attentive you are in flight, the farther you’ll go. Flight training requires a lot of time, money, and effort. Instructors will try to explain everything to you, but if you put in the additional effort, it will be better for you. The instructors are licensed pilots and are happy to take students for a free flight and show them new aircraft. Being enthusiastic opens many doors in general aviation.

You are more likely to excel at flight training if you show up with a positive attitude.

Have Fun!

First flights are always the best. Despite how cheesy it sounds, it’s true. It’s an unforgettable feeling the first time you’re handling the controls since you don’t have much responsibility. Ask questions before and after the flight, but while you’re flying, enjoy the view.

The Way Forward!

Learning to fly a plane is a unique and fascinating life-changing experience. When you know how to fly a plane, you invest in yourself and acquire a skill that becomes a personal achievement. These tips should help you go into your first lesson with a clear mind.
