Iran charged a former international and well-renowned football player, Voria Ghafouri, of Kurdish origin. He has strongly backed the anti-hijab protests that have shaken the country since September. He is a recognised individual who is arrested during the anti-hijab protests, amid severe scrutiny on the manners of the national team in Qatar at the World Cup. He came out in support of individuals who are protesting against anti-hijab.
Iran has witnessed several protests against anti-hijab for over two months which also flared by the death in detention of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She was also of Kurdish origin after she was charged with an alleged violation of Iran’s stringent dress code for women.
Voria Ghafouri, an unreserved or candid figure who emerged 28 times for Iran up until 2019, was charged over intense accusations that he unfurled “propaganda” against the Islamic citizens. He is a well-known figure arrested in a crackdown during protests, among extreme inspections on the code and conduct of the national team in Qatar at the World Cup. The national team abstained from signing their national anthem at the foremost match against England.
However, the apprehension is also expanding over the dimensions of the authority’s restraint in the Western Kurdish precincts of Iran, with right groups claiming many people have been killed over the last few weeks. Voria Ghafouri was arrested for backing anti-hijab protests after a training session with his club members. He was arrested on the charges of having tainted the reputation of the national team and spreading negative propaganda against the country.
Kurdish-immersed rights group Hengaw, established in Norway, also stated he had been charged with publishing a photo of the player in classic Kurdish dress. A former and renowned Iranian international football player, Ali Karimi, another straightforward advocate of the anti-hijab protests, also published the same image of Ghafouri on his Twitter account in aid of the player. Voria Ghafouri stood by his people was the caption of the posted image by Ali Karimi.
Voria Ghafouri, 35, was documented as an esteemed member of Iran’s 2018 World Cup team, however, he was not listed in the final selection of the team at this year’s World Cup which was held in Qatar. He is from the Kurdish-originated city in Western Iran of Sanandaj, Ghafouri had also posted an image of himself in classic Kurdish dress on his Instagram account.
