Twitter has introduced a new company move called the “Responsible Machine Learning Initiative” to determine if their algorithms cause unintentional harm and are planning to release their findings to the public.
To start, the company is planning to study its image-cropping algorithm as they are being criticized for being biased towards people with lighter skin.
Many users in the last year have pointed out that the photos cropped in people’s timelines appear to be of white-skinned people rather than black-skinned ones, which has upset many users.

The team is also planning to analyze content recommendations for users preferring different political ideologies across 7 countries.
It’s not clear what impact this initiative will bring. But according to some sources, Twitter might change some aspects of its platform according to its findings or change how Twitter applies and builds ML ( machine learning).
But whatever may be the case, they must take a decision quickly. Many lawmakers have pressed social media platforms like Twitter, and Facebook to show more transparency regarding their algorithms.
And some of them, have even proposed legislation that will require them to evaluate their algorithms for bias. For more such trending news keep reading Mangoster’s blog.
